Intrusion detection is a process of detecting security breaches by examining events occurring in a computer system. Building an effective intrusion detection system with good accuracy for real-time anomaly detection is a major challenge as cyber attacks and dependency on Internet are on the increase. The negative consequences of attackers’ action can render a host or network inoperable for a period of time thereby hampering business transaction or research work. This paper presents our work in building a model for identifying intrusions for known and novel attacks using rough set implemented in a tree form. Rough set theory is used to identify important attributes and in generating explainable detection rules from network packets features. Experimental results on KDD 1999 cup dataset show that the method is promising in terms of detection accuracy as it performs well on some known and novel attacks, hence suitable for real-time intrusion detection.
